Could you make a difference in local children’s education?

In recognition of National School Governors Awareness Day, we are calling on residents from across the district to consider volunteering as school governors.

By playing a key role in schools, governors make a huge difference in children’s education and lives. They serve as strategic leaders in schools, working with headteachers and leadership teams to set priorities, monitor standards and support decision-making.

Governors come from all walks of life and bring a breadth of professional and personal experiences, as well as community insight.

It’s not just a highly rewarding role, it’s also a great way to develop your own skills.

Cllr Jayne Rylah, Cabinet Member for Education, said:

“We are incredibly grateful to all our current governors and we encourage others to join them in supporting education across Kirklees. When people bring skills and passion into our schools, every child benefits.

“School governors are a backbone of strong school leadership. Their contribution ensures that children and young people benefit from fresh perspectives and community voices around the table.”

Kirklees has a strong tradition of community governance. One recent story involved a local governor, Val Hollingworth discussing the role after 25 years of service.

Val is one of hundreds who have signed up as school governors to help shape the delivery of education in our schools.

If you are interested in volunteering, the School Governors page summarises the role and how to apply. You can also contact the council’s Governor Service by calling 01484 225010 or email kirklees.governors@kirklees.gov.uk

National School Governors Awareness Day, this year is on February 12th. A national organisation called Governors for Schools is running online sessions where you can gain further insights into the role. Visit the Governors for Schools website to see more.
