Inclusive employment shaping futures: Kyle’s story

cedar court

Kyle’s journey into employment at Cedar Court Hotel is an example of how inclusive employers and REAL employment working together can change lives and shape futures.

Kyle has always wanted a career in hospitality. He completed several qualifications giving him strong technical and practical skills. However, he faced barriers when trying to secure employment, not hearing back from applications or struggling during formal interviews.

That was until Kyle attended the National Inclusion Month event in Huddersfield. The event aims to bring together employers committed to inclusive employment with individuals that have additional needs.

Here, Rebecca from our employment and skills team introduced Kyle to Shaun, the General Manager at Cedar Court, Huddersfield. This gave him the opportunity to speak about his qualifications and goals without the pressure of a formal interview – allowing him to shine.

Shaun recognised Kyle’s potential and the effort he had already invested into his career. He was later invited for an informal chat, tour of the kitchen and a work trial.

“Meeting Kyle in person rather than reviewing a stack of CVs made a huge difference. His attitude and qualifications really impressed me. Offering him the opportunity felt like the right decision.”

Kyle’s journey has been supported by REAL Employment, a service that specialises in supporting adults with additional needs into employment. Kyle received tailored support from a job coach and our team worked closely with Cedar Court to make sure the workplace met Kyle’s needs.

Once he started the job, Cedar Court created a calm, supportive pathway into employment. Kyle was introduced to the team, given additional time to learn new tasks, and paired with a workplace mentor. Regular check-ins helped Kyle build confidence gradually.

Kyle has grown significantly in the months since he started. He has developed new skills, gained independence, and integrated naturally into the kitchen team.

Kyle said:

“Never give up. Keep the enthusiasm to work hard, be flexible and dependable. Believe in yourself.”

For Cedar Court, Kyle’s employment has provided meaningful value. The experience has increased staff awareness of neurodiversity, strengthened the team culture, and boosted confidence in supporting individuals with additional needs.

Kyle continues to access ongoing mentoring and development opportunities as he works toward his long-term ambition of becoming a Head Chef.

Stories like Kyle’s demonstrates the impact inclusive employment can have. Benefitting both individuals and businesses willing to embrace it. When employers choose to focus on individual strengths, they unlock talent, strengthen their teams, and create workplaces where everyone can thrive.

Cedar Court’s approach shows that inclusive practice isn’t complicated. It simply requires understanding, flexibility, and belief in people’s potential. And when those elements come together, the results can be life changing.
