Have your say on the future of culture in Kirklees

Culture strategy

What do you think culture should mean for Kirklees?

We’re inviting everyone – whether you live in Kirklees, work or own a business here, or just visit us regularly – to have your say on our new proposed strategy for the next ten years of culture in Kirklees.

What do we mean by culture?

Culture’s about more than different backgrounds and customs.  It’s about arts, music, history and creativity, the things we enjoy and how we share our stories.

What’s in the strategy?

This strategy talks about how we want to support the creation of more exciting events and activities in Kirklees, and help more people enjoy them.  It looks at how we can use culture to support our local economy and make our communities stronger.  We’re also looking at how, through culture, we hope to improve local places and local people’s health and wellbeing.

Everything in the strategy builds on what’s already happening in Kirklees, in a way that will help us adapt to new ideas, influences and bigger change.

Have your say

You can have your say on the proposed Cultural Strategy online, by visiting your local library or civic building, or by attending one of our in-person consultation events.

These events will be:

The survey will close at 5pm on Wednesday 22 July, so make sure you’ve given us your feedback before then!

The bigger picture

The Cultural Strategy is just one part of our wider plans to make Kirklees a better and more vibrant place to live, work and visit.  Lots of work is already underway to breathe new life into local towns and villages, make the most of our heritage, support local businesses and encourage more tourism for Kirklees.  Over the next decade, culture has a big part to play.

Rachel Spencer-Henshall, Deputy CEO of Kirklees Council and Executive Director for Culture, says:

“Culture isn’t just something you inherit – it’s something we’re all continually recreating.  It’s about what we enjoy, how we share things we love and how we all grow.

“We’ve titled this strategy ‘Culture is Ordinary’ because culture plays a part in everyone’s everyday life, whether we notice it or not.  That’s why it’s important to share your views, thinking about things like learning, creativity and everything they impact.  This is your chance to have your say on what the next ten years look like for culture in Kirklees.”
