Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Plan – a creative town

Working with Beam, we commissioned an artist to create something for the Dewsbury underpass to give it a fresh new look, provide functionality and, most importantly, make people smile and provide the community with a sense of pride in their area.

The artist, Saba Rifat, is creating a historical, urban vibe and bringing in many aspects of the town centre to the new art installation below the busy Rishworth Road.

Art helps us to remember who we are, our history, culture and sense of place. It helps us make spaces into places.

Saba worked with students from Kirklees College and the public to form ideas and has named the artwork ‘Tessella’, a feminine Latin word to describe square tiles of stone and glass used in mosaics.

Once completed, the installation will include 3,000 tiles and will be a stunning work of art.

The installation will take place in the week beginning 24 October. The installation is expected to take one week.

Make sure you drop by and have a look, be there or be square!

The art installation is part of the Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme, funded by the council as part of our ambitious ten-year Dewsbury Blueprint project.

Firehouse building

Bringing yet another one of Dewsbury’s historic buildings back to its former glory, Fieldhouse will be developed into apartments.  Preserving Dewsbury’s heritage and giving the building a new purpose so future generations can enjoy it.

Our plans for this to be a residential development will support local businesses and boost Dewsbury’s economy. It’s in a perfect location opposite the train station, and right on the doorstep for excellent transport links.

As a Grade II Listed building the owners, Mood Developments, have started the process of getting all the required permissions from the council and Historic England, to make these plans come to life.

With a £2.38million grant and the commitment of Mood Developments, we have the boost to turn Fieldhouse into 23 stylish and contemporary Station Apartments.

Work is expected to start towards the end of this year.
