Public art will supply an exciting and creative dimension to Dewsbury town centre, whether it be in permanent 3D sculptural works, signage, murals or street furniture.

Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Plan – a creative town

Working with Beam, we commissioned an artist to create something for the Dewsbury underpass to give it a fresh new look, provide functionality and, most importantly, make people smile and provide the community with a sense of pride in their area.

The artist, Saba Rifat, is creating a historical, urban vibe and bringing in many aspects of the town centre to the new art installation below the busy Rishworth Road.

Art helps us to remember who we are, our history, culture and sense of place. It helps us make spaces into places.

Saba worked with students from Kirklees College and the public to form ideas and has named the artwork ‘Tessella’, a feminine Latin word to describe square tiles of stone and glass used in mosaics.

Once completed, the installation will include 3,000 tiles and will be a stunning work of art.

Dewsbury creative town arts programme is funded by kirklees council, and is part of the councils blueprint plans to revitalise the town center

The installation will take place in the week beginning 24 October. The installation is expected to take one week.

Make sure you drop by and have a look, be there or be square!

The art installation is part of the Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme, funded by the council as part of our ambitious ten-year Dewsbury Blueprint project.
