It’s that time of year when the early morning sun shines through and we crack the windows open to let in the fresh breeze and we leap into action with a spring clean and a bit of DIY around the home. It’s the perfect time to assess our homes and clear away anything that could cause a trip or fall.
Let’s start outside
Spending time outdoors should be relaxing and enjoyable experience, so let’s check a few things:
- Remove/replace uneven or broken steps or paving slabs.
- Paint the edge of any steps so they stand out and are easier to see.
- Look into getting grab and handrails installed, particularly at doorways.
- Remove moss and leaves that can be slippery when wet.
- If you can have hanging baskets and planters instead of pots on the ground.
And if you enjoy the outdoors, but not so much the gardening and don’t want to risk a fall, ask family, friends, or neighbours to help.
Clear the clutter
What’s a spring clean without a serious declutter! Sometimes we end up creating new piles of things here and there – we need to take action.
- Keep books and magazines on shelves rather than the floor.
- Clear away trailing wires – run them along the wall if you can or under flooring.
- Ensure walkways, hallways and stairs are clear of clutter and you have a route through your home.
- Rugs and mats at the top or bottom of stairs can increase the chance of a fall, so remove them if you can.
- If an item is no longer used or needed, recycle or donate it to your local charity shop.
- Light up your life and check that each area of the house is well lit.
- Some electronic items in the home such as TV’s and lights can be operated remotely or through apps on your mobile device or virtual assistants like an Alexa or Google Assistant.
- Re-arrange items in kitchen cupboards and the fridge so that the ones you use most often are within easy reach.
- When you’re sorting the washing out, having a seat positioned next to the machine means you can sit and avoid bending too much.
Walking aids health check
A walking aids needs a little TLC too. Here’s a few things you can check:
- Make sure the rubber bottoms of your walking aid are not too worn or uneven.
- Check that it’s the right height for you. If you have an adjustable aid, it might be helpful to ask someone to help.
- Wear appropriate and correct fitting footwear when in the home or out and about.
