We will remain as the care provider in existing specialist housing services for adults with learning disabilities. Known as Supported Living, these are services where we provides care services, but the buildings are owned by other organisations.
What did councillors look at?
At a cabinet meeting today (12 March), councillors reviewed the outcome of a 12-week non-statutory consultation that explored the viability of the council continuing to be the main care provider at The Mews in Mirfield. The consultation also looked at options to redesign services offered at Brighton Court, Heckmondwike and Wilton Terrace, Cleckheaton.
Outcome of the consultation
Following the consultation outcomes, councillors have now approved plans for the local authority to remain as the care provider across all three schemes (The Mews, Wilton Terrace and Brighton Court). This means the council will focus support on adults with more complex learning disability needs. It will also mean some tenants will be supported to move on to alternative accommodation that better meets their needs.
Councillor Jackie Ramsay, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said:
“We are seeing an increasing demand for adult learning disability services, so we need to refocus our offer on those people who have the most complex needs.”
“By changing the way these services are used, we hope to be able to support people who currently cannot access a local service to do so in the future.
“Existing affected tenants and families affected by the changes will be fully supported for a safe transition, where appropriate, to accommodation that allows them to continue being independent and live well.”
