Have your say on the future of Heckmondwike town centre

From Friday 19 May, we’ll be inviting anyone who lives in, works in or visits Heckmondwike regularly to get involved and share their views on plans for the future of the town centre.

What are the plans?

Our initial programme of work will see £1.5 million invested in Heckmondwike as part of the Heckmondwike Blueprint – our master plan for development in the town over the next 10 to 15 years.  This consultation will help shape the final blueprint plans, and will also help us determine which projects we should prioritise.

The initial blueprint plans being shared during this consultation have been formed based on previous public engagement, which began back in 2021.  But we want to keep opening these plans up for engagement, to make sure those who care most about Heckmondwike have every opportunity to get involved.

Basics of the blueprint

The Heckmondwike Blueprint is based on several key principles:

  • Celebrating community and inclusivity
  • Creating a vibrant and active town with strong connectivity for everyone
  • Creating a sustainable and healthy town with good access to parks and green spaces

The blueprint aims to provide Heckmondwike with a stronger sense of place. By finding more ways to celebrate and add to the town’s culture, and through community events and markets.  We want to create spaces in Heckmondwike that are engaging for people of all ages.

We also want to make the town better connected and more accessible.  We’ll be creating more safe and attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists. This will help people travelling in and around Heckmondwike stay active and healthy – as well as support our green agenda!

We’re also looking to create beautiful new pocket parks and green spaces, to help with residents’ health and wellbeing and make Heckmondwike town centre a more attractive place to spend time.

What happens during the consultation?

You’ll be invited to give your opinions on a number of projects which support each of the principles above, and your feedback will shape the future of Heckmondwike.

The consultation will be open between 19 May and 19 June, and you’ll be able to give your feedback either online or in person.

You can have your say online at kirklees.gov.uk/heckmondwike-blueprint

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Growth & Regeneration, says:

“It’s a very exciting time for Heckmondwike, and for all the towns we’re investing in through our blueprint plans across Kirklees.  The blueprint is about preserving Heckmondwike’s past while looking to the future – finding ways to celebrate its culture and heritage, whilst also developing a more vibrant and varied town centre that will work for decades to come.

“Our plans have already been shaped by the views of local residents, and we want to keep that engagement going every step of the way.  I want everyone who lives in, works in or visits Heckmondwike to have their say on these plans, because it’s an opportunity to shape changes in the town centre over the next decade and beyond.”
