Latest Dewsbury artwork weaves together local stories

The latest artwork to be unveiled in Dewsbury, as part of the ‘Creative Town’ project, is a three-piece work called ‘Tapestries’.

Artistic collaboration Lenny & Whale have developed these three Tapestries with the idea of weaving together local people and their stories, in a medium which also pays homage to Dewsbury’s rich heritage in the textiles industry.  Katrina Whale and her partner, nicknamed ‘Fabric Lenny’, have created the Tapestries by engaging with local people who live and work in the town centre.

What is the Creative Town project?

The Creative Town project has been a three-year initiative, investing in local art and artists to celebrate Dewsbury’s people, culture and heritage, and to revitalise the town centre.

This programme of work is part of the Dewsbury Blueprint, which is all about driving more footfall for Dewsbury and creating a town centre that’s more varied and vibrant.  The Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme is delivered by a local cultural development organisation called Beam.

How is this funded?

This programme of work has been funded by Kirklees Council and by Arts Council England.  We’ve worked closely with the Dewsbury Town Deal Board to allocate funding across the Dewsbury Blueprint, and deliver projects which will have a long-term impact on the town and on local people.

If you’d like to find out more about how our different funding sources work, you can check out council funding explained.

Where can you see the artwork?

You can see all three tapestries displayed on Bond Street.  We love receiving your photos, so don’t forget to tag us when you snap this and any other artwork in the town centre!
