Kirklees Council’s Major Transport Capital Schemes annual report 2024, was discussed at the Cabinet meeting that took place yesterday (Tuesday 10 September).

The report provides a clear update on the £179 million investment, previously approved at cabinet, of over 20 capital programme schemes across the district. The report outlined the approval required from cabinet to progress with the schemes and deliver them effectively within the available budgets.

Officers will now continue to progress with a number of schemes over the next 12 months as the transport investment programme moves projects into the delivery phase. Schemes will focus on active travel (walking and cycling) and modal shift, reducing congestion, improving public transport and investing in our towns and villages. Delivery teams will carry on working with residents, businesses and partners to ensure disruption is limited and works are phased.

How are the projects funded?

Most projects are largely funded from West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund (WYTF), Active Travel Fund (ATF) and City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS). In some cases, projects have been match funded with £6.45million committed by the council.

Some of the projects in the report

New cycle and walking links will be introduced as part of the Dewsbury Walking and Cycling project. The Dalton-Deighton Active Travel programme and Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Broad Canal scheme will all see improved accessibility for walkers and cyclists.

Improvements on the Spen Valley Greenway are planned as part of the Sustainable Travel Corridor between Dewsbury and Cleckheaton via Heckmondwike. Investment in walking and cycling along major highways between Dewsbury town centre, and Chidswell Estate in Batley, will create a safer, more accessible and attractive environment for people to enjoy.

Huddersfield Bus Station and Huddersfield Rail Station Connections will see upgrades to public areas, with a new cycle hub, walking and cycling links and new building canopy at the entrance.

Councillor Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways said:

“Investment in our ambitious travel and transport network are far reaching. It shows our long-term commitment to improving links between our towns and villages, creating more opportunities for those that live and work here, whilst stimulating our local economy. By promoting active travel and modal shift, we can reduce our carbon footprint and create healthier communities. The positive impact these projects will have will be felt across Kirklees once completed.”

Each project has undergone periods of essential consultation and engagement with local communities, businesses and key stakeholders to ensure what is being delivered meets the needs of the communities it will impact.
