Road Safety Week pledges to make Kirklees safer for all

Road safety week

We are encouraging everyone to talk about the importance of road safety, whether that’s as a motorist, pedestrian, cyclist or horse rider, and make a meaningful pledge as part of this year’s Road Safety Week.

West Yorkshire Vision Zero is a road safety aim to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Lots of small pledges can make a big difference and make roads safer for all.

Councillor Moses Crook, Cabinet Member for Housing and Transport said:

“Road Safety Week serves as an important reminder that every choice we make on the road can prevent an accident and save a life. By making a pledge, we will commit to safer streets for all, one step and one journey at a time.

“We remain proud of the important work our emergency services, charities, schools, local community groups and partners continue to do to support safer roads in Kirklees and ultimately help prevent injuries and save lives.”

Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Nosheen Dad said:

“No death or serious injury is acceptable on our roads. The work the council’s Road Safety team are conducting in schools with young teens is providing them with life skills that will remain with them and help keep them safe.

“On Sunday, I was honoured to be able to represent Kirklees at the SCARD Oakleaf Memorial Service held in Leeds, a moving service attended by those bereaved or injured on the roads.”

Road safety week and Worl Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

Road Safety Week is an annual campaign delivered by Brake, a national road safety charity.  Each year, local schools, organisations and charities get involved to share important road safety messages and remember those affected by road death and injury.

On Sunday 17 November, buildings across the world, including Kirklees town halls, were lit up orange as part of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

The road safety team continue to work within and support Kirklees schools to help create further awareness around road safety and promote active travel. Safety of pedestrians, particularly teenagers, is a key component of our road safety strategy which is currently under development.
