We are drawing schools in to create a mural for Heckmondwike Town Centre

We are working alongside artist Emmeline North to add a creative touch to Heckmondwike former market site once it’s completed – a key part of the Heckmondwike Blueprint which will transform the unused square into a flexible space for events and people to socialise.

Emmeline North have previously worked with us to produce artwork for projects within the Dewsbury Blueprint like the Urban Rewild mural near Dewsbury Bus Station and will now be working with local schools to create a mural for Heckmondwike town centre.

Workshops will begin this month with the two schools and a youth group, Holy Trinity, Heckmondwike Grammar and Fearless People. Following the workshops, the schools will work alongside Emmeline North to design the artwork for the new market square, adding vibrancy to the space that can be enjoyed by everyone.

As well as adding creativity to the square and creating a more vibrant space, there may be other opportunities for art around the town centre in the future.

These works are part of the Heckmondwike Blueprint – a masterplan for regeneration of the town centre over the next decade and beyond – and will follow the completion of the new market square that aims to open in the new year. Other projects that will follow can be found on the Heckmondwike Blueprint webpage.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said;

“In Heckmondwike, as with all our plans for regenerating town centres across Kirklees, what we’re working towards is creating great places for future generations.

“It’s great to see young people involved in our Heckmondwike Blueprint and for their artwork to be seen in the town centre for years to come. Heckmondwike is their town and it’s important that the residents of the future play a role in the regeneration programme, and I look forward to seeing the designs they come up with.

“The murals will fit perfectly with the works we have planned for Heckmondwike and are inspired by the heritage and aspects of the town centre that residents love.

“We hope this artwork not only makes more people want to visit Heckmondwike but explore, and make the new square a bright and inspiring place for people of all ages.”
