Kirklees Libraries celebrate 10 years of volunteer contributions
We are proudly celebrating 10 years of incredible support from library volunteers. Their dedication has helped libraries across the district thrive.
As part of National Volunteers Week, Kirklees Libraries are recognising the vital role these volunteers play in enriching local communities.
From supporting customers on a daily basis, delivering IT sessions to running Lego clubs and story sessions as well as checking out books and even opening and closing buildings, volunteers and Friend of Groups (formal community groups which support our libraries through training volunteers and supporting community activities) play a key role in libraries throughout Kirklees.
Cllr Amanda Pinnock, Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, said:
“Our library volunteers are a shining example of community spirit in action. They help make our libraries not just places of learning, but spaces of kindness, inclusion and connection.
“I want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single volunteer and Friend of Group, your time, energy, and care are deeply appreciated, and your contribution is vital to the wellbeing of our communities.”
Since the volunteer programme began in 2015, hundreds of individuals have stepped up to support their local libraries. Their dedication has made a lasting impact on communities across the whole of Kirklees.
To mark the occasion, celebratory events are being held this week at libraries across Kirklees, where volunteers will be treated to cake and awarded certificates, as a show of appreciation for all their efforts.
John, a long-time volunteer at Marsden Library, shared his personal experience:
“When I first came to Kirklees Libraries, I knew straight away it was somewhere special. I thought, ‘I could really help here.’ And honestly, it’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.
“What keeps me coming back is the people. It’s the chats, the smiles and those small everyday moments that make a big difference. We’re creating connections, offering a listening ear and making each day a little brighter for someone.”
Our volunteer contributions over the past 10 years add up to over 220,000 hours. This has enriched the lives of countless residents – they are true community champions.
Kirklees Libraries continues to welcome new volunteers from all backgrounds. No previous experience is required, just a willingness to get involved and make a difference.
