Cabinet have approved our revised Local Development Scheme
This week, Cabinet approved our revised Local Development Scheme for Kirklees to replace the previous version published in March 2024.
Creating a plan for development across the whole of Kirklees, and all the relating guidance that supports landowners and potential developers, is complex. We are currently updating the Kirklees Local Plan, which sets out how all kinds of development borough-wide is managed.
What is the Local Development Scheme
The Local Development Scheme lays out a three-year timetable for producing the Kirklees Local Plan, other policy guidance and advice, and all the reporting and programmes that go alongside these. It also lays out the points at which we will run further public consultations, allowing people who live in, work in and visit Kirklees to have their say on future development, and the processes surrounding it.
Why we have revised the scheme
We revised the Local Development Scheme based on the first round of consultation relating to the Local Plan, and off the back of national planning reforms proposed by the government.

We’re developing our vision for the whole of Kirklees – a vision that will support economic growth and the creation of new jobs, and deliver the number of new homes needed to address the local and national housing shortage, all whilst protecting the qualities at the heart of Kirklees’ character. And alongside this vision, the crucial but complicated planning guidance that goes with it.
“This Local Delivery Scheme lays out every step of this process, all the documents and guidance we need to create and why – and, most importantly of all, all the points we’re going to engage with people who live and work in Kirklees every step of the way.”
