Cleaner and Greener: Big improvements to recycling approved for Kirklees

Recycling

Kirklees Council Cabinet has approved exciting plans that will transform the way we recycle at home.

By 2028, households across the district will benefit from new food waste and glass collections – on top of the paper, card, plastics and metals we already recycle.

This is part of the government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ programme, which aims to make recycling services consistent across England. For Kirklees residents, it means more choice, less confusion, and a service that’s better for the environment.

What’s changing?

  • New collections for food waste and glass
  • Continued collections for paper, card, plastics and metals
  • New bins, vehicles and infrastructure to support the service

What happens next?

Over the next two years, we’ll be planning carefully and working closely with residents to make sure the new services are clear, simple and work for everyone.

Cllr Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste, said:

“Today’s decision is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve recycling for every household in Kirklees. By 2028, our communities will have extra recycling options, helping us create a cleaner, greener district.”
