Building Bridges Through Games and Stories
When Linda Lee arrived in Kirklees from Hong Kong, she brought with her a rich cultural heritage and a love for community. Settling in Dewsbury, Linda faced the challenge of building new connections in an unfamiliar place. That’s when Community Plus stepped in.
Connecting Through Games
Linda’s passion for Mahjong—a traditional Chinese game—became the key to building friendships. With support from Community Plus Connector Shaf, Linda joined the Dewsbury Library Games Group and successfully applied for a Community Plus Fund microgrant. This allowed her to purchase a Mahjong table and launch the Dewsbury Mahjong Group, which now runs alongside the existing Games Group at the Arcade Pop-Up in Dewsbury town centre.
The weekly sessions have become a lively, inclusive space where people gather to play, connect, and share stories. Mahjong has attracted seasoned players and curious newcomers alike, creating opportunities for friendship and cultural exchange.

Amplifying Voices Through Art
Linda’s journey didn’t stop at games. Inspired by a performance from Phoebe Chan exploring migration stories, Linda worked with local partners to bring the show “From Old Bean Grows Bak Choy” to Dewsbury. The event sparked meaningful conversations and amplified migrant voices, paving the way for future performances across Kirklees.
Why It Matters
From newcomer to community leader, Linda’s story shows the power of grassroots initiatives and creativity to strengthen community ties. Her work has:
- Connected people through inclusive gaming sessions
- Celebrated cultural heritage by introducing Mahjong to a wider audience
- Amplified migrant voices through art and storytelling
