Joseph Norton Academy – build update December 2025
We’re excited to share the latest update on the construction of a transformational new special school on Deighton Road in Huddersfield.
When the state-of-the-art building is complete, Joseph Norton Academy will relocate from Scissett and begin a new chapter as Josie Thirkell Academy.
This school will cater for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties.
What’s been happening?
Steel structure

The new building is really starting to take shape with contractors working on the erection of the main steel structure.
Pre-cast concrete planks are being craned in and installed to the steel framework. These planks act as structural support and create the building floors. Now we can really see the building coming to life.
Work on both foul, and surface, water drainage is progressing with soakaway tanks installed. Backfilling works are now taking place.
Road construction

Ground works are also progressing. A road up to the new building has been created. Concrete kerbs have been set along the edge of the road and asphalt has been laid and compacted.
What’s up next?
Contractors will start on:
- Roofing works
- Preparation work for external masonry
- Installation of ground floor reinforced concrete slabs
- Installation of perimeter pre-cast concrete ground beams.

Transforming SEND services
This investment is part of our wider commitment to transforming support for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Alongside Joseph Norton Academy, work is underway to rebuild and relocate Woodley School & College, which supports autistic pupils aged 5 to 19. Additional SEND places are also being created across other schools in the district.
