Major refurbishment enters final stage at key Huddersfield town centre car park

Upperhead Row

Upperhead Row Car Park, above Huddersfield Bus Station, is moving into the final stage of its major refurbishment.

To finish the work safely, the car park will close for six months from Monday 5 January 2026.

Work taking place

Essential work will take place on the lifts, stairwells and fire exits, and the entrance and exit ramps will be upgraded. When it reopens, visitors will see a significant improvement in quality with refreshed, brighter lighting, clearer signage, enhanced CCTV, and improved fire and emergency lighting will all be in place to make the car park safer and easier to use.

What has happened so far

A lot has already changed since work started earlier this year. Accessible spaces have more than doubled, rising from 11 to 23. Each level now has its own colour and number making it easier for people to remember where they parked. Clear pedestrian routes make moving around simpler and safer, and parking bays are wider to fit modern vehicles. The outside of the building has also had a paint refresh, giving the whole site a lift.

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council and Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“This investment means safer, more modern parking at one of Huddersfield’s busiest car parks. It will make a real difference to everyone who uses it and strengthens the wider parking offer across the town. Thank you to all commuters for your patience and understanding while we get these essential improvements done.

“Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for transport in Kirklees. Major projects are set to begin, including the multi-million-pound upgrade of Huddersfield Bus Station as we prepare for bus franchising with the publicly owned Weaver bus network, improvements to transport links in both Dewsbury and Huddersfield town centres, and ongoing work to enhance the West Yorkshire rail network through Network Rail’s TransPennine Route Upgrade. Together, these schemes will help create a more connected and accessible transport network for our communities.”

Alternative parking

Other town centre car parks at Springwood, Cambridge Road and Albion Street will remain available during the closure. Full details, including locations and charges for these sites and all council parking in the town, can be found on our website.
