Holmfirth Town Centre Access Plan update – December 2025

Here’s the latest update on essential improvement work in Holmfirth town centre, helping deliver the Holmfirth Blueprint and make the town centre more accessible for everyone.

What’s happened recently

Hollowgate piling

At the end of November, piling works on Hollowgate were finished. We know the large machinery caused some disruption to access, and we’re grateful for your understanding while this essential stage was carried out.

Resurfacing and road marking on Victoria Street and Huddersfield Road

Highways officers worked overnight to resurface Victoria Street, Town Gate, Station Road, and Huddersfield Road. A special thank you goes to the Corner House Café for keeping the team fuelled with late‑night refreshments!

Yorkstone flag replacement on Victoria Street

Following investigations, concerns were identified about relaying the Yorkstone flags due to historic cellars beneath Victoria Street that are still in use. Thinner Yorkstone was explored but would not safely support the required loads.

An alternative solution was agreed and approved through conservation, and specialist materials have now been installed.

What’s next

Week commencing Monday 5 January

Work will start on removing the current bridge. During this period, pedestrian access will be maintained, however, traffic will be narrowed and controlled on Hollowgate.

From Monday 19 January – Monday 6 February

Once the old bridge has been removed, work will start on building the foundations for the new bridge. This will require Hollowgate to be closed to vehicles.

From Wednesday 21 January – Monday 2 March

Further construction work around the bridge area will take place with Hollowgate remaining closed to vehicles.

From Tuesday 3 March – Monday 9 March

Final stages of resurfacing will take place and road markings reinstated.

Start of April 2026

All highways improvement works on Victoria Street, Towngate, Hollowgate and Huddersfield Road will be complete.

Huddersfield Road Car Park

From January 2026, work will continue on improving the car park and events space. We are working with specialist contractors on the foundation designs. Once building work is complete market stalls will return, and the space will be used for local events. We’re excited to share the updated plans for the car park in the new year.

Construction of the car park and events space will be completed in Spring 2026.

Public drop in sessions

Thank you to everyone that has attended one of our public meetings or drop-in sessions this year. The last drop-in session of 2025 was on Tuesday 16 December with the first session of 2026 taking place on Tuesday 6 January 2026.

Look out for upcoming sessions in 2026 where you can meet the project team and ask questions.

Shop local

Holmfirth is a treasure trove of independent retail and leisure spots and the perfect place to enjoy in the lead up to the festive period. There’s plenty of long and short stay public parking in and around the town centre with public transport operating as normal.
