Cabinet approves bold new proposal for Huddersfield regeneration
At their meeting on Tuesday 13 January, cabinet members approved a bold new regeneration proposal to add to the Huddersfield Blueprint – the council’s masterplan for Huddersfield.
The ‘Station Gateway’ regeneration scheme aims to transform the area surrounding Huddersfield Train Station into a dynamic and inclusive transport hub that enhances connectivity, drives economic growth, and inspires future regeneration.
The plan sets out a framework to regenerate Huddersfield Station Gateway. The vision proposes redevelopment of the west side, near Fitzwilliam Street where practical access remains a priority with a new station entrance, mobility hub, parking, and enhanced public realm.
The east side of the station around St George’s Square would be reimagined with vibrant landscaping, new street furniture, and flexible spaces for events at its heart.
This regeneration would complement, the transformation of the iconic George Hotel and plans for Estates building and the Station to Stadium Corridor and help unlock the redevelopment potential of the St George’s Warehouse.
Now that Cabinet have approved the plans, the council will start the process to explore funding and development partner opportunities to begin to bring the vision to life.
Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said:
“The Station Gateway vision is bold, creative, and builds on the significant investment already underway in Huddersfield through the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the Station-to-Stadium Corridor. It is a fantastic opportunity to improve connectivity, promote sustainable travel, and create a gateway that truly reflects Huddersfield’s ambition and is yet another step in our commitment to regenerate Huddersfield and create a modern vibrant town for future generations.
Huddersfield is already undergoing a huge transformation, and these concepts add another exciting layer of growth and opportunity for the whole district.”
This proposal forms part of the council’s wider vision to create healthy, vibrant town centres where people can live, work and relax.
It would complement major investments including Huddersfield bus station, Network Rail’s multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade as well as the ambitious Our Cultural Heart project, and the towns historic open market, demonstrating the council’s commitment to revitalising towns and villages across Kirklees.
