Holocaust Memorial Day 2026 – Bridging Generations

Holocaust memorial day

On 27 January, people across the world will come together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, reflecting on the millions of lives taken and the lessons we must carry forward. This year’s theme, Bridging Generations, challenges us to connect stories, memories, and responsibilities from one generation to the next.

How we’re supporting events

We’re supporting the charity, 6 Million+, who work amongst the local Kirklees community to create temporary art installations every year to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

Libraries have a collection of books, information and resources for anyone wanting to learn more about historical events, that allow people of all ages to understand and start conversations to help with learning.

We’ll also be lighting up our town halls in remembrance.

Councilllor Liz Smaje, Mayor of Kirklees said:

“Holocaust Memorial Day is a time for deep reflection. This year’s theme, Bridging Generations, reminds us that remembrance is not only about honouring the past—it is about shaping the future. By sharing stories and lessons across generations, we strengthen understanding and stand united against hatred and division.”

Holocaust Memorial Day at Holocaust Centre North

  • Creative Reflections: Explore how art and storytelling help keep memories alive and relevant for younger audiences.
  • Community Conversation: Take part in discussions about how we can challenge prejudice and build bridges between generations today.

This event is free to attend, but booking is essential. Find full details and reserve your place:

Why it matters

Remembrance in Kirklees goes beyond memory – it’s about connection, understanding, and action. By listening to survivors and sharing their stories with younger generations, we ensure that the lessons of the past continue to shape a better future.

How to take part

  • Attend the event at Holocaust Centre North and be part of an intergenerational conversation.
  • Light a candle at 8 pm on 27 January—either at home or at a communal gathering.
