Kirklees celebrates National Year of Reading 2026 with ambitious programme for all ages
We are proud to support the National Year of Reading 2026, a UK wide campaign designed to inspire a love of reading, improve literacy and highlight the vital role that reading plays in our lives and wellbeing.
The National Year of Reading encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to read more often and in ways that work for them, whether that’s novels, poetry, audiobooks, graphic novels, newspapers or digital content.
The campaign also shines a spotlight on the power of libraries, schools, families and communities in helping people develop lifelong reading habits.
Throughout 2026, Kirklees Council will deliver a wide-ranging programme of events and activities across the borough, building on the strength of its libraries, cultural venues, schools and community partners.
Planned activity across our libraries and in communities includes:
- Family friendly reading activities and storytelling events
- Summer of Sport and reading
- Early years and school-age reading challenges through our innovative Library Adventures scheme
- Events aimed at exploring local and family histories
- Creative writing and illustration workshops for children and young people
- Reading for wellness sessions
- Outreach activity bringing books and reading into community spaces, care settings and neighbourhood venues
The full programme for the year is now being finalised and will ensure that reading is accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone – regardless of age, ability or background.
Cllr Amanda Pinnock, Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, said:
“The National Year of Reading aligns perfectly with our ambitions for Kirklees.
“Reading supports education, mental wellbeing, social connection and economic opportunity. In 2026, we’ll be working with partners across the borough to create exciting, welcoming opportunities that help people rediscover reading or fall in love with reading for the first time.”
The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Elizabeth Smaje, said:
“The National Year of Reading gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the power of stories and the difference reading makes in people’s lives. Here in Kirklees, our libraries and community partners do incredible work to open doors to learning, imagination and connection for residents of all ages.
“Throughout 2026, I’m delighted that we’ll be bringing even more exciting opportunities into our towns and villages that help people explore local history or simply rediscover the joy of a good book.
“I encourage everyone to get involved, visit their local library and be part of this year long celebration. Whether you read every day or haven’t picked up a book in a while, there’s a place for you in the National Year of Reading.”
To celebrate the Year of Reading, we have added All Access Comics to Libby! Our readers can dive into a world of colourful adventures with thousands of comics, manga, and graphic novels.
Further details of events and opportunities will be announced throughout 2026.
Residents are encouraged to visit their local library, follow Kirklees Libraries website or download our Libraries app through the Apple Appstore or Google Play for updates throughout the year.
