Holocaust Memorial Day 2026 – A reflection from the Mayor of Kirklees
As Mayor of Kirklees, I am honoured to join our communities in marking Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January. This is a day of solemn remembrance—a time to reflect on the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides, and to reaffirm our shared commitment to a world free from hatred and persecution.

The theme for this year, Bridging Generations, speaks powerfully to the responsibility we all carry. Survivors of the Holocaust have shown extraordinary courage in sharing their stories. These testimonies are not only a record of unimaginable suffering—they are a call to action.
They remind us that the lessons of history must never fade, and that each generation has a role in keeping those lessons alive.
Bridging generations means more than passing on stories—it means building understanding, empathy, and resilience. It means challenging prejudice wherever we find it and standing united against division. As Mayor, I believe these values are at the heart of our borough, and I invite everyone to take part in this important day of remembrance.
Together, let us ensure that the bridges we build today will stand strong for generations to come.
