Huddersfield gearing up for transport network improvements
Improvements to transport, travel and access in Huddersfield Town Centre gets underway later this month, as work is set to begin on the Huddersfield Rail Station Connections scheme.
The project will make it easier to travel between the towns rail and bus stations, and aims to support greener, more efficient journeys, improve traffic flow and journey times and give priority to pedestrians and accessible routes.
A more accessible town centre for all
Currently dominated by traffic and busy junctions, Trinity Street, Northumberland Street, and John William Street are set for major improvements which aim to bring town centre streets to life with high-quality paving, wider footways and improved cycle infrastructure, creating a more welcoming and accessible environment for everyone.
Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of the council and Cabinet Member for Transport said:
“Our transport network across Kirklees is undergoing change that will benefit generations, with multi-billion-pound investment from the Transpennine Route Upgrade and the recently announced Northern Powerhouse Rail, which will both better connect towns and cities across the north of England.
“To make the most of these major projects, we need a modern and reliable local transport network that can support the scale of these changes.
“There will be some short‑term disruption, but the long‑term benefits will be substantial. By providing better access to education, jobs and training, and unlocking new opportunities for investment and housing, we’re strengthening Kirklees position as a vibrant, well‑connected place to live and work.”
Traffic management
To ensure the projects are completed efficiently and safely as possible, the work will be completed in three phases with suitable traffic management in place at each site. Plan your journey and add additional time. Check the national roadworks map for diversions of the project page.
Multi-million-pound investment in our transport network
Kirklees Council secured over £60 million from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund, which will be used to deliver an ambitious programme of transport improvements to make it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport, connecting communities to more jobs, training and education opportunities.
