Kirklees Councillors approved the proposals to invest in a transport system that will make it easier, more affordable and greener to travel around West Yorkshire.

The proposals detail a £2.1 billion investment to transform transport and travel across West Yorkshire and secure funding that will address the current needs of Kirklees communities.

A collaborative approach

The Local Transport Plan (LTP4) has been developed in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the five district authorities – Kirklees Council, Bradford City Council, Calderdale Council, Leeds City Council and Wakefield Council.

The proposals

The proposals set out a long-term vision for West Yorkshire and was developed using the guiding principles of the new Weaver Network which prioritises plans to develop a safe, inclusive and integrated transport system. One that is reliable and affordable, delivers active travel choices and supports more people to incorporate zero and low emission transport options into their daily journey’s.

Last year, Kirklees Council adopted the first Transport Strategy for the district.  A policy framework to deliver a more inclusive and sustainable transport network that supports the council’s ambitions of achieving net-zero carbon emission by 2038.

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council and Cabinet Member for Transport said:

“Across West Yorkshire we are working together to build a safer, more affordable and reliable transport network that strengthens connections and supports our region to grow and thrive.

“The Local Transport Plan and the Kirklees Transport Strategy will work alongside each other to identify opportunities for both local and regional investment. This is about more than getting from A to B, it’s about opening up more social opportunities, and greater access to training and employment.

“Every journey should be safe, and through better design, infrastructure and a collaborative approach, we can deliver a transport network that support Kirklees communities and businesses.”

Previous consultations

The Combined Authority delivered a series of public consultations with over 1400 people taking part in events, focus groups, drop-in sessions and meetings with key stakeholder groups ensuring the LTP4 reflects the diverse communities across the district.

The consultation revealed strongest support for accessible and inclusive transport for all, cross boundary connections and working together with neighbouring authorities and improved safety.
