We have been recognised for our climate action
For a third year running, we have been awarded an ‘A’ from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for climate action.
CDP operates the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system, with over 1,000 cities, states and regions reporting environmental data through them in 2025.
Our ‘A’ score ‘demonstrates comprehensive disclosure, mature environmental governance, and meaningful progress towards environmental resilience’.
To be awarded the highest score, we were required to meet a series of robust leadership criteria, including publicly disclosing environmental data, maintaining a comprehensive city-wide emissions inventory, and publishing a credible climate action plan.
We also conducted a full climate risk and vulnerability assessment and set a clear climate adaptation goal which outlines how they will address current and future climate hazards.
Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet member for Highways & Waste said:
“For the third year in a row, the council has been recognised for its consistent dedication to the climate emergency and the real change we are enacting for those who live and work in Kirklees.
“Our efforts in increasing the number of electric vehicle charging points, especially for residents who don’t currently have access will make it more practical for more residents to drive electric vehicles, helping us cut carbon emissions and improve local air quality. We are also taking great steps within the council’s own buildings and vehicle fleet to choose cleaner energy and reduce emissions.
“This battle can’t be fought alone, and we continue to collaborate with regional partners and local communities to pave a way forward that works for both people and the planet.”
Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP, said:
“Cities play a decisive role in shaping a resilient and earth-positive future. When local governments commit to transparent disclosure, robust climate planning and clear adaptation strategies, they not only protect their communities but also unlock opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth. Their leadership shows how data-driven climate action can strengthen both people and the planet.”
We achieved A-List status due to the ambitions set out in our Environment Strategy, ‘Everyday Life’, as well as continuous efforts with our partners and the community to tackle climate change.
Ongoing projects such as the LEVI scheme, which will lead to the installation of hundreds of new electric vehicle chargers, and decarbonising our vehicle fleet and buildings, are all helping to move Kirklees in a cleaner and greener direction.
Working in partnership with One Community and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), we have been supporting community organisations to reduce their emissions and protect the local environment, by delivering grants to small organisations and buildings.
We are also working alongside Calderdale Council and key partners to deliver a landscape recovery project which aims to build resilience to extreme weather in the districts, improve biodiversity, and increase access to residents to support more people to enjoy the outdoors.
We declared a climate emergency in 2019 and are committed to become Net Zero and Climate Ready by 2038.
