New milestone in the renovation of the historic George Hotel

George Hotel

The next steps in the renovation of the George Hotel will start next month as it prepares for a bright future with an internationally renowned hotelier.

The Grade II* listed building sitting in the heart of Huddersfield town centre is being upgraded which will see 108 hotel rooms created, a bar, restaurant, gym and conference rooms.

Once restored the building will be managed by the Radisson Hotel Group. It’s currently set to become the first Radisson RED Hotel across the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber.

Revised plans for the historic building to preserve the building’s character and boost its earning potential were approved in October 2025.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said:

“The transformation of the George Hotel is one of the major projects of the Huddersfield Blueprint and regenerating the town centre. It is a gateway building into the town which, when renovated can boost our local economy and be perfectly placed for visitors to stay.

“We want to proudly celebrate our town’s rich history and will soon want people to help create the look and feel of the building, so it represents our heritage, identity and character that makes our community unique.

“This is another exciting milestone, as like Our Cultural Heart, we will start to see a hive of activity taking place. With all our plans we are breathing new life into historic buildings and celebrating the old alongside the new.”

Adela Cristea, Chief Development Officer UK, Ireland & Nordics at Radisson Hotel Group, said:

“It’s fantastic to see work progress on this historic building, the hotel is rich in history and heritage and one of Huddersfield’s most iconic landmarks. We’re delighted to be in partnership with Kirklees Council as they carry out their impressive plans to regenerate the town and attract visitors.

“Once construction is complete, we’re looking forward to introducing the signature bold, vibrant style of our Radisson RED brand, whilst paying homage to the town with references to its history, culture and the people.”

Extended hoardings have already been installed on John William Street for scaffolding to be erected in February. This will allow dismantling work to start on the west side of the Grade II* listed building.

The historic stone front will be carefully preserved, maintaining its distinctive three-storey character. Above this, the existing roof will be replaced with two stylish new storeys of accommodation, thoughtfully set back to respect the original frontage.

This approach will blend modern design with heritage, ensuring the new development complements the historic architecture while creating high-quality living space in the heart of the town.

A dedicated compound will soon be created in St George’s Square, anticipated to start in March 2026, to provide office space and welfare facilities for construction workers during the redevelopment.

Ed Weston, Regional Director for Yorkshire at GMI Construction Group, said:

“As a Yorkshire company, we are proud to be delivering this landmark project that will restore an important part of Huddersfield’s heritage while supporting long-term economic growth and community revitalisation. The transformation of The George Hotel reflects a shared commitment to exceptional delivery, combining precision, care and respect for the building’s historic significance.”

Huddersfield town centre continues to benefit from major cultural, business and education investments. The multibillion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade is improving connectivity across the North of England, and Huddersfield Railway Station.

Ongoing improvements to the transport network continue in Huddersfield with the first phase of the Huddersfield Rail Station Connection scheme, which will see Northumberland Street, Trinity Street and St. John’s Road benefit from better accessibility, cycle infrastructure and improved traffic flow and provide better links between the towns rail and bus stations, supporting more sustainable and efficient journeys.
