Young people ‘Break Fast Together’ at special event in Kirklees
Children and young people from different faiths joined together for a special “Breaking Fast Together” event, organised by Kirklees Council.
The event for children in care, care leavers and those who support them was an opportunity for young people of different backgrounds – whether they observe Ramadan or not – to experience the traditions of Iftar, the daily evening meal when breaking fast.
This follows on from the Christmas Day lunch held on December 25th when young people in care were invited to celebrate together, enjoy a meal and forge new friendships.
Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said:
“It was wonderful to see so many young people coming together in such a welcoming atmosphere — asking questions, embracing difference and building friendships. Events like this foster mutual respect and help our young people feel part of something positive.
“As a council, we hold many activities to enrich the lives of the children and young people we support. We go way beyond our statutory duties as a corporate parent – it’s about ensuring our children and care leavers have opportunities to grow, connect and enjoy positive experiences across our communities.”
As part of the gathering, Imam Mohammad Desai led a prayer before the meal.
Feedback from attendees has been very positive, with many highlighting the friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to try new food, learn something new and connect with others.
The meal was open to all eligible young people and young adults and was funded entirely through the generosity of donations from local businesses and organisations. We would like to thank Chum Chee’s, Brgr Bro’s, Kebabish, CandyClaudz.official for their generosity.
The Iftar meal was supported by a fundraising platform held by Huddersfield Town Foundation, a charitable trust which remains open to donations.
