New chapter for Dewsbury Market as wider town investment continues

Dewsbury Market

Change is happening across Dewsbury in 2026, one of the exciting projects at the centre is the regeneration of Dewsbury Market.

This is just one part of a number of projects that will move forwards this year as part of the Dewsbury Blueprint, the council’s long-term plan to create a more vibrant and future-proof town centre.

What’s next for Dewsbury Market?

The redevelopment of Dewsbury Market will begin in 2026, creating a modern market space that builds on its proud heritage while attracting new visitors and businesses. Work is continuing to progress on the plans, with the council working closely with traders as the next phase of the project develops. As preparations move forward, people will begin to see some changes around the market area in the lead-up to construction starting on site. Plans include a new outdoor events space and a Town Park, helping to make the market a place where people can shop, meet and spend time.

To make sure traders can continue to operate during construction, a temporary market will open in summer 2026. The council has already started working closely with traders to plan the move and allocate spaces at the temporary market, helping to ensure trade can continue while work progresses on the main market site.

What else is happening across Dewsbury?

Work is nearing completion on the historic Dewsbury Arcade, which has been empty since 2016. The building is being restored and brought back into use as a shopping destination in the heart of the town centre.

Construction is due to finish in spring 2026, with the Arcade expected to reopen in summer 2026. Its return will strengthen the town centre offer alongside the market improvements.

Improvements to the Civic Space and memorial gardens are due to complete in spring 2026, creating a greener, safer and more accessible area with upgraded paths and new trees.

Field House is also being converted into 23 new town centre apartments, bringing more people to live in Dewsbury and supporting local businesses.

In partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, work continues on Dewsbury bus station to improve facilities and accessibility. Construction began in 2025 and is expected to run until May 2027.

How is this being funded?

These projects are being funded through several investment streams, including the Dewsbury Town Investment Plan, which secured £24.8 million from the Government’s Towns Fund in 2021. With match funding from the council and partners, this represents more than £60 million of investment into Dewsbury.

Together, these projects mark an important step forward – with Dewsbury Market at the heart of the town’s next chapter.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said:

“It’s really positive to see momentum building across so many regeneration projects in Dewsbury. By carefully phasing our work, we’re making sure the town centre continues to function and thrive as investment is delivered.
The  redevelopment of Dewsbury Market is central to this vision, creating a vibrant space that celebrates our town’s heritage while welcoming new visitors and supporting local businesses.

This is about long-term change that benefits residents, businesses and visitors alike, and ensuring Dewsbury has a strong, sustainable future.”
