Wedding Treasure Hunt set to make 2019 a summer of love in Kirklees

Love will be in the air this summer as 1000s of couples seek out the chance to win a wedding worth £2,000.

The winning couple will celebrate their special day in style with a ceremony and reception, including a gourmet meal for up to 60 people, at either Huddersfield’s or Dewsbury’s stunning Victorian Town Halls.

Our Town Halls and Registration Services have come together to offer this fantastic prize, which can be won by taking part in The Big Wedding Treasure Hunt.

The treasure hunt, which runs until the 23 August, will take participants around some of the district’s beautiful venues in search of hidden letters that spell out a special word.

Once couples have found the word, they can email it over to the council, for a chance to be included in the grand finale.  Twenty couples will then be selected at random to compete in a live on-stage quiz called the Couple’s Challenge at 3.30pm on 7 September 2019 at Dewsbury Town Hall.

During the Couple’s Challenge, twenty couples will go head to head to find out who knows each other best.  The three couples with the highest scores will then compete in a surprise final battle to win the wedding of their dreams.

The competition aims to showcase our venues which include everything from museums to town halls as places to visit and celebrate special occasions.

Cllr Rob Walker Cabinet Member for Culture said:

“Kirklees is incredibly lucky to be the home of some stunning town halls, and many people simply don’t realise that they cater for weddings, receptions and other celebrations.

With their impressive sweeping staircases, wood panelling and beautiful ceremony and banqueting rooms, our town halls offer all the grandeur of a stately home but at a fraction of the price.

This competition is a fun way to get couples to visit some of our venues, and see what we have on offer – I would encourage anyone planning to getting married to take part.”

The competition is open to couples living in England or Wales, who are looking to hold their wedding before the end of 2020.

Family Fun with the Gruffalo

If you usually feel the back to school blues after the summer holidays, we have the cure.

Join us for Family Fun with the Gruffalo on Saturday 7 September at Dewsbury Town Hall.  A day dedicated to Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much loved character who is celebrating his 20th Anniversary.

There will be lots of free things to do including; screenings of the animated film, and a chance to meet the Gruffalo himself at intervals throughout the day.

For older children there’ll be a free outdoor games area, and the opportunity to have a go on our climbing wall (£3 a turn).

Children of all ages can take part in the Town Hall Mouse Hunt, with a wristband (£5 in advance or £6 on the day) which gives them a trail sheet, unlimited admission to our craft and indoor games areas, and a small prize for finding all the mice hidden around the venue.

We’re still not sure what Gruffalo’s favourite food is, but there’ll be plenty of food on offer to tickle even the pickiest eaters’ taste buds from cream teas to something spicier.

Adults are well catered for too; we have specially commissioned play taking place in the Old Courtroom, a string quartet and behind the scenes tours of the town hall.

There will also be a pop-up museum, and loads of information about what’s happening in our venues and in the wider community.

Anyone who wants to try out our gin selection and other tipples in the new bar; or just fancies an evening with a difference, is welcome to stay for the final of our Big Wedding Treasure Hunt.  Twenty couples will go head to head in a fun quiz to win a £2000 wedding at one of Kirklees’ beautiful town halls.

Cllr Rob Walker Cabinet Member for Culture said:

“This fun event is all about showcasing the wide variety of activities and events taking place in council run venues across Kirklees.  The fun day is a taster of what’s happening all year round, in our museums, libraries, parks, town halls and public buildings.  So after you’ve braved the climbing wall and found all the town hall mice, be sure to visit our information stalls where you can learn more about what else is on offer.”

You can book your free slot to meet the Gruffalo on the day, and make sure you’ve got enough charge in your phone for a picture.

Buy a wristband for the Town Hall Mouse Trail in advance and save £1 per child.
