Schools Get Together to Share Life Growing Up in Different Communities
Two schools from different parts of our area have come together to celebrate community cohesion through sports and physical activity. Children from Cambridge Street School in Batley were hosted by Golcar Junior, Infants and Nursery School for an afternoon of getting to know one another.
How did it come about?
Organised by Kirklees Council’s Cohesion Team and Kirklees Sports and Physical Activity Development Team, the pupils from Cambridge Street School had previously spent five weeks learning coaching skills to be able to pass on to younger pupils.
Golcar pupils were able to learn new skills in football, cricket and table tennis with Cambridge Street School students providing support and guidance. The event provides an opportunity for two different communities to discover more about others’ lives and school life.
Cllr Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Communities, Kirklees Council, said:
“It is really pleasing to hear of our younger generations learning about their different lives. Sport and games are often a great way to break down barriers and encourage dialogue.
We are committed as a Council to support initiatives like this and help young people build successful connections.”
Mr Suleman Collector, Headteacher at Cambridge Street School, said:
“Our students thoroughly enjoyed working with the Kirklees teams to prepare the presentations and delivering the sessions to the Golcar Junior School’s Year 5 class.
The event helped the students make friends with the pupils at Golcar but also helped build their confidence at presenting and coaching other youngsters at various sporting skills.
We’d like to like to thank Golcar Juniors, Infants and Nursey School for hosting us and giving our students the opportunity to deliver these sessions. We’d be delighted to welcome them to our
School later on in the year where we can continue and build on this great work together.”

“It was a pleasure to host as part of this coaching and confidence building event. The boys from Cambridge Street were a credit to their school and delivered the coaching sessions with enthusiasm and patience.
We would love to build upon this and make future plans for our schools to work together and for us to visit Cambridge Street. The sporting focus yesterday was a lovely introduction for us to build on understanding more about each other’s communities.”
