Kick-off! Rugby League is coming home in 2021

Hurrah…it’s official! We have been chosen to host a significant game in the Rugby League World Cup 2021 – a men’s quarter-final will take place at John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield.

History in the making

As the birthplace of rugby league, this is a poignant moment in history – the quarter-finals are an important stage in the tournament which is planned to be one of the most inclusive and diverse sporting events ever hosted in England.

It is intended to leave a long-lasting legacy which celebrates the heritage of sport and increases our global visibility.

How were the host announcements made?

The Rugby League World Cup 2021 host announcement was made earlier today at Manchester’s Home Cinema when a live broadcast from BBC Sport Online was streamed. Representing the Council, Adele Poppleton – Head of Culture and Vibrancy was present to witness the big reveal.

Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of the Council said:

“In August 2018, we learned that our bid had reached the candidate stage and we were naturally excited for the outcome. Hearing today, that we will be hosting a really prestigious game of the tournament is wonderful news.

It will help to secure the economic growth of Kirklees – putting us on the map nationally and internationally – bringing visitors from other regions, as well as other countries to the heart of West Yorkshire.

Sport brings people together, it breaks down barriers and contributes to health and wellbeing of all our residents.  It provides an opportunity for people to follow their aspirations and ambitions and inspires communities to get involved.

All the hard work from putting forward our bid last August to reaching the candidate stage – having our bid assessed and organising site visits of the potential host grounds has ended with a great result.”

Jon Dutton, Chief Executive of the Rugby League World Cup 2021 said

“We are very excited to be bringing the biggest tournament in the sport’s history back to the birthplace of rugby league. Huddersfield and the wider Kirklees community have a hugely rich rugby league heritage and I am sure that fans will look forward to the men’s quarter-final being staged at the John Smith’s stadium”.
