The Huddersfield Blueprint: Kingsgate & King Street

The exciting and successful launch of The Huddersfield Blueprint ten-year plan unveiled exciting plans to offer a traditional town centre by supporting and developing the existing Kingsgate area.
The Kingsgate Shopping Centre provides the more traditional retail experience within Huddersfield Town Centre and we want to protect and support this.
What new things do we want to see?
We’d like to introduce leisure opportunities which will increase visitors into the town and further support activity at the Cultural Heart. A new cinema and leisure complex is set to be introduced to the Kingsgate Shopping Centre to build on the retail offer and attract more visitors.
On 20 June, 2019 Kirklees Council’s Planning Committee approved plans to convert the current units occupied by House of Fraser in Huddersfield into several restaurants and a street food area on the lower ground floor with a nine-screen cinema on the upper floor of Kingsgate operated by The Light.
What else do the plans include?
The plans – submitted by WD Kingsgate Ltd — also include an extension to the roof to create a roof terrace Sky Bar. An external slide will also be built, so people can travel from the bar to the lobby of the cinema.
How is this scheme being funded?
We have provided a £7 million loan to help bring the scheme to life.
Will the streets become more pedestrian and cyclist friendly?
We will focus on making the surrounding streets to the Kingsgate more pedestrian and cyclist friendly, enhancing them and also improving the public realm so it’s of high-quality and uncluttered.
How can I have my say on the Huddersfield Blueprint?
The plans are subject to a three-month consultation and engagement period which will begin on Monday 8 July.
Residents can view the plans at the Blueprint shop at Unit 32, the Piazza Centre, Huddersfield from 8 July. The shop will be open Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm.
