Kirklees parks and green spaces are world class

We are celebrating after winning six Green Flag Awards for parks and green spaces in the borough.

What is the Green Flag Awards?

The Green Flag Awards scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces. It sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Who are the winners?

Kirklees winners include Almondbury Fort at Castle Hill, Beaumont Park, Crow Nest Park, Greenhead Park, and Wilton Park. An extra win for the district came with Oakwell Hall Country Park (Green Heritage Site).

Councillor Rob Walker, Cabinet Member for Culture and Environment, said:

“Winning a Green Flag Award status visibly demonstrates to the local community that a clear improvement has been made to a site which we’re very proud of.

This is recognition of the level of community involvement and input the council has put in to create such wonderful public spaces.

This is a fantastic win for the council and recognises all the hard work we have put in, as well as the work from the local communities. It is an excellent attraction for tourism in the area.”

  • Dear Rob Walker, congratulations to the winners. Next year let’s hope for more.
Jessop Park Batley- given by the Jessop family to the people of Batley was once the best park. Kirklees were going to remove bushes that have damaged the wall on Healey Lane and arrange skips for clearing rubbish away. It’s 150 years of Batley this year , please could you make the park the best again, as a priority to win another flag next year?
Dewsbury Country Park would be a strong contender too.

  • KIRKBURTON All Hallows churchyard team of volunteers were also awarded another Green Flag award to continue their awards which they have held for many Years

we have the finest parks and green spaces in the north of England.

  • I notice you have given no news of another Green Flag Community Award in Kirklees. East Bierley Village became the first Village in the North and one of only three in the UK to be awarded the Green Flag Community Award.
