The South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival
There is a wide range of festival events to help you explore our stunning and diverse landscape, whether you’re on foot, bike or horse.
The festival is the perfect opportunity to explore the wild and wonderful South Pennines Park landscape, its heather-covered moors, steep-sided valleys, canals, reservoirs and packhorse trails. Spanning the Yorkshire/Lancashire border this area has a fascinating history, offering everything from Neolithic stone carvings to world-changing industrial heritage; and many hidden gems. Over the centuries it has inspired artists and writers; and those who visit and those who stay.
You may wish to march across the moorland on one of our strenuous all-day hikes or perhaps meander through the streets of Hebden Bridge to discover the secrets of its industrial past or maybe cycle from Ogden to Otley; whatever your pace or interests the South Pennines has it all.
The South Pennines is a place where you’ll find intense local pride and people who are passionate about the area and want to share what they know…our event guides are no exception. They will be able to guide you through the landscape and share their knowledge.

The Fire of Olympus (opera)
The Fire Of Olympus; or, On Sticking It To The Man tells the story of Prometheus and Pandora in a brand-new opera by Tim Benjamin, performed by the innovative mavericks Radius Opera.
Zeus is the all-powerful President of Olympus, undermined by activists led by the prankster Prometheus. An accidental theft leads to love, hate, revolution, prison, and anarchy. But a world in ruins demands in Zeus a strong leader – was this his plan all along, or has he finally met his nemesis?
In The Fire Of Olympus, incredible virtuoso singers re-imagine the popular 18th century operas of Handel: tuneful, direct, and sung in English. The brilliant cast and orchestra are joined by the digitally combined voices of over 1000 volunteers from across the North, in a spectacular and exciting theatrical event.
This radical, accessible opera uses the power of Greek myth to resonate with the modern world, and is filled with drama, passion, politics, tragedy, and comedy. Unmissable.

A Walk in Greenhead Park with Thomas Denham!
Huddersfield’s premier public park opened in 1884, but Alderman Thomas Denham had come up with a detailed vision for it back in 1869. 150 years later, ‘Thomas Denham’ returns to escort visitors round the park and set out his dream in person.
Greenhead Park is an attractive Grade II listed Victorian town park which has been restored to its former glory thanks to a multi-million pound Heritage Lottery funded project. It was the vision of Alderman Thomas Denham, memorialised by a plaque on the Park Lodge as the man who ‘secured the Park for the town’.
Alderman Denham set out his ideas for a park for the people of Huddersfield in a letter to the Huddersfield Examiner in 1869, and will be making an ‘appearance’ 150 years on to guide visitors round the park and spell out his vision. Park historian David Griffiths will be on hand too to explain how far Denham’s ideas are reflected in the Park as it is today.
