Fostering – find out more

Fostering a child can be an incredibly rewarding experience – so come along and find out more.

What’s happening?

We are holding a special event on Tuesday October 15 when you can meet some of our foster carers and hear all about their experiences in caring for looked after children.

Our recruitment team will also be on hand to answer all your questions and give advice on how you can get involved. The event is at the John Smiths Stadium, Huddersfield, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Sadly, some children have to move out of the area – away from their friends, family and school – when we don’t have the right place available for them. We’re recruiting carers on a full and part-time basis and there are lots of different ways to foster.

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet member for Children, said:

“We are hugely committed to giving children and young people the best start in life, helping them to fulfil their potential. Foster carers make a lasting difference, but we need more carers for children of all ages, as well as children with disabilities and additional learning needs.

There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ foster carer as people come from all walks of life. It doesn’t matter about your religious beliefs, whether you’re married, single or in a civil partnership. We welcome enquiries from LGBT people, you can be employed or not and you don’t have to have children of your own.

All you really need is a spare room, along with the time, space and love to share with a child.  All the children ask is for is a safe, stable, nurturing home where they can experience family life, grow and thrive.”

What support is available?

In Kirklees we provide high-quality support for our foster carers, as well as for children and young people. There is a dedicated Placement Support Team, links with the Virtual School Service and foster carers can also access our Employee Healthcare scheme with lots of benefits available.
