Applications for older Covid business grants due to close

We are encouraging businesses to make sure they’ve claimed any Local Restriction Support Grants they’re entitled to before applications close on 31 March.

Local Restriction Support Grant (LRSG) schemes

We are currently administering the Local Restriction Support Grant (LRSG) schemes that have supported businesses through Covid restrictions in Kirklees, some going back eight months to when Kirklees was under Tier 2 restrictions. Over £139 million has been distributed to local businesses since the country first went into lockdown restrictions last March.

The closing date, introduced by the government, will bring applications for the LRSG schemes available whilst Kirklees was under Tier 2, Tier 3 and National Lockdown restrictions at various times between 5 August 2020 and 15 February 2021 to an end on 31 March.

Applications for the current LRSG lockdown grant from 16 February to 31 March will remain open for now, with applications due to close on 31 May. All final payments will be made to businesses by 30 June.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Corporate said:

“Since the pandemic began we’ve distributed over £139 million in total in various grant payments to 11,000 businesses across Kirklees. These payments have provided much needed financial support for many businesses to survive the Covid restrictions we’ve faced locally.

Closing applications for these older grant schemes will bring an end to a chapter of Covid history I hope will never have to be opened again. Whilst it has been such a challenging time for our businesses there is now a light on the horizon and we’re in the strongest position possible for when the lockdown is eventually lifted.

Like businesses owners across Kirklees I’m keen to reopen our businesses safely, at a time that is right, to welcome back customers and drive forward our economic recovery post-pandemic.

The vast majority of eligible businesses have already claimed the grants they are entitled to, or will have received their grant payment automatically from the council.

We all want to see a thriving Kirklees and our shops and businesses reopened and life become more normal. I would encourage all businesses eligible that haven’t made a claim already, to check the eligibility criteria online and make a claim.”

Restart grant scheme

We are awaiting guidance from government on the Restart grant scheme that should run from 1 April to support businesses as they start to reopen.

Discretionary grant

There is currently no application closing date for our Discretionary grant, although we have paused applications between 12 and 31 March whilst we bring the scheme into line with the Restart grants. Any business that has already made a claim for this grant does not need to reapply. We will continue to process all grant applications received up to 12 March and make payments as appropriate.
