Continental style pavement café culture could be coming to Huddersfield, Dewsbury & Batley

We are looking into ways to support town centre hospitality businesses ahead of the potential reopening on 12 April.

What’s happening?

We are looking into using some of our outdoor spaces in towns across Kirklees as pop up hospitality areas.  The plans are still being worked up, but they could feature tables and chairs, and some protection from the elements.  There would also be social distancing and security measures in place to keep everyone safe.

We are asking town centre businesses to let us know if this is something that would be of interest to them, this will help us to both understand demand and work out the logistics in more detail.

Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet member for Regeneration said:

“We’re cautiously looking forward to the easing of restrictions,  and the possibility of meeting up with friends and family for a drink or food outdoors.  We know that for some of our bars, cafes and restaurants the lack of outside space will be a major concern when it comes to deciding whether to reopen, so we want to offer then a safe alternative.    Its early days in our planning,  but if there is appetite for this kind of space then we will do what we can to support businesses and make it happen.”

We’ll be contacting businesses to discuss the offer over the next few weeks, and businesses can also get in touch directly by email: towncentreenquiries@kirklees.gov.uk.
