Year of Music Pre-Launch Event
We have big plans for 2023, as part of the Yorkshire regions plans for a year of culture, a Year of Music for Kirklees.
As part of the Year of Music preparations, we have organised a pre-launch event on 22 September at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield. This free pre-launch event will feature a mixture of live performances, food and drink from local businesses, welcome speeches, and keynote speaker Shain Shapiro.
Shain is the Founder and CEO of Sound Diplomacy, the leading global advisor on growing music and night-time economies in cities and places. He is also the Managing Director of The Center for Music Ecosystems, a global non-profit, which focuses on understanding and advancing music ecosystems to foster more sustainable communities. Shain is thrilled to be a part of the YOM 2023 Launch and the incredible programme to come.
Performers on the evening include: Deadbeat Brass, a fusion of New Orleans jazz, funk, grunge and Latin grooves; Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir, who bring audiences together through life-affirming roots and gospel music; Musica Youth Strings, the widely recognised string section of Musica Youth Orchestra who have had phenomenal success at the National Festival of Music for Youth. More will be announced in the run-up to the event.
Following the pre-launch event, there is also an after-party at The Parish, Huddersfield featuring live music from The Lovely Eggs.
Councillor Will Simpson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Greener Kirklees, said:
“The pre-launch event for the 2023 Year of Music will be just a taste of things to come, with our ambitious plans for the Year of Music. Throughout the evening there will be live performances showcasing the diversity and quality of music in Kirklees.
We want the whole of Kirklees to come together as a community to celebrate the Year of Music in 2023.
Behind the scenes, our teams are already working together to build the foundations for an incredible year – to develop partnerships and collaborations within our music community, and to encourage everyone to experiment, learn, listen, and enjoy.”
Qaisar Mahmood, Chair of the Music Partnership Board, said:
“The year of music is a fabulous opportunity to bring together the diverse and creative talent that exists in Huddersfield and beyond to a broader audience. Through music we will ensure the growth of creative opportunities, mental health and wellbeing and boost the local economy.
Music is unique in the way that it moves people beyond language, crosses cultural boundaries and connects us emotionally. This is a real opportunity for lovers of music and the creative community to speak with one voice”
