Safer Internet Day 2022

Free training to help you keep your kids safe online

Tuesday 8th February is Safer Internet Day – a global event that promotes the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people and celebrates their role in creating a safer internet.

To mark Safer Internet Day, we’re shouting about the free training we offer which could support you in keeping your kids (and yourself) safe online.

How will we do this?

Digital technology can open all kinds of doors for children and young people, offering a boundless new world of learning and creativity.  But it can also present dangers, and sometimes this can be hard to monitor – especially if you’re not incredibly tech-savvy yourself, or don’t know what to watch out for.  Where this is the case, we want to help.

We’re encouraging all parents and carers to think about how we can keep young people safe online, and take up some of our free training to boost your confidence in doing so.

Between 8th & 9th February, we’re offering the following workshops:

Workshop 1: Parental Controls

We’ll explain what parental controls mean, and how you can set them to help keep your children safe.  We’ll also explore further options like filtering software.  By the end of the session, you will also know how best to report inappropriate content or contacts should you realise something’s not right.

8th February 1 pm-2 pm

Workshop 2: Apps and Security Settings

We’ll look at using extra technology to stay safe.  This will include location-sharing apps like OurPact and Life360, which can help track when your kids have arrived safely at school.

8th February 2.05-3.05 pm

Workshop 3: Staying Safe Online for Adults

This workshop will help adults understand more about staying safe online themselves.  They will learn about phishing, how to keep their details safe, how to stay secure across multiple digital devices, and how to check their technology for vulnerabilities.

9th February 11 am – 12 noon

These workshops are completely free to take part in.

Check out Kirklees Council’s offering online to find out how we can help you get better digital access and improve your digital skills. We offer more free courses and digital support across Kirklees all year round.
