We have begun the next phase of works on Huddersfield’s iconic George Hotel
The George Hotel is one of the most significant heritage and conservation projects Huddersfield has seen in many years.
In 2021, we oversaw extensive surveys and works to ensure the building was safe, removing asbestos and loose masonry. A second phase of works is now underway. The works will deliver external conservation works to restore and preserve the unique heritage of this important building.
Who is leading the conservation work?
The conservation work is being led by William Birch & Sons Ltd, specialist contractors based in York. We have funded the project. Support has been provided by The Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zones and West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Getting Building Fund.
What will the conservation work do?
These conservation works will address the issues on the exterior of the building, including masonry, windows, and roofing. Local materials will be used for the repairs and will be in keeping with the existing structure. The conservation works will also preserve and enhance the significance of this building for generations to come.
We have produced a video with more information and a look at the condition of the building.
Councillor Shabir Pandor, Leader of the Council, said:
“The George Hotel has been sat derelict for far too long. It is a vital part of Huddersfield’s heritage and that is why the council purchased it. We can make sure it opens its doors again and, crucially, in the right way so that it stays open for good. The George Hotel is of high historical value. I have great confidence that our project will bring this iconic building back to life – whilst celebrating and conserving the heritage that makes it so special.
I look forward to following the progress of the George Hotel. The building is expected to be open in summer 2024 when it will again take its rightful place in the heart of Huddersfield.”
What happens next?
We are exploring the possibility of attracting a quality hotel operator and working in partnership with market specialists, Queensberry. This will allow us to directly engage the hotel sector to conduct an operator and tenant search for the George Hotel. To turn the George Hotel into an attractive prospect, a reconfiguration of the interior and an extension may be the best way forward.
Early feedback from the market suggests there is a good deal of interest in working with us to develop a branded 90-plus room hotel with a complementary, quality food and drink offer.
Early concept drawings have been completed to guide our plans. A marketing brochure demonstrates the potential of Huddersfield as a destination. It also demonstrates the potential of the George Hotel to become a landmark hotel in the area.
Competitive tendering will take place. Cabinet will then review prospective operator options in August 2022.
