Celebrating our Armed Forces and support for service personnel

Armed Forces Community

Armed Forces Day will be marked across Kirklees on 25 June. To mark the occasion flags will be raised at Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Cleckheaton, and Batley Town Halls.

Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom is an annual celebration. People have the opportunity to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. The Armed Forces community includes serving troops, service families, veterans, and cadets.

Cllr Masood Ahmed, the Mayor of Kirklees said:

“Millions of people around the world have witnessed the spectacular show of the Armed Forces coming together for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

“However, many service men and women have given the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Many still live with the physical and mental scars for life. As well as those friends and family who are there to love and support them.

“That’s why it is incredibly important that we recognise the contribution from those currently serving, their families, veterans and cadets and offer them vital support wherever possible.”

Cllr Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for the Environment said:

“In signing the Armed Forces Covenant we made a formal declaration that acknowledges our close co-operation with the Armed Forces Community and commitment to support them.

“One of the many ways we do this is creating a dedicated webpage showing the support and help available.

“On behalf of Kirklees Council, thank you to all the current serving personnel, their families cadets and veterans.”

Kirklees Council Armed Forces Covenant

We have pledged our support for the armed forces by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. The Armed Forces Covenant is a formal declaration that acknowledges our close co-operation with the Armed Forces Community.

This is a voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and its local Armed Forces Community. This Covenant encompasses the moral obligation between the Nation, the Government and the Armed Forces, at the local level.

Support is available for you and your family if you have ever served in the armed forces.

Help with housing, employment, health and wellbeing are just some of the issues that organisations across Kirklees can help people with.
