Mayor’s praise for volunteer group on receiving top national honour

A volunteer group has been honoured by the Mayor of Kirklees for their continued hard work and receiving one of the highest accolades possible.

Mirfield in Bloom has been awarded the Queens Award for Volunteering. It was presented with the honour by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Ed Anderson.

Working together

We have worked with and supported Mirfield in Bloom since it first came into existence in 2017.

Since then, they have been recognised, on numerous occasions, for the positive role they play within the community.

The Mayor of Kirklees Cllr Masood Ahmed said:

“This is another great example of how community groups and the Council can work together to benefit the areas where they live.

“The support offered has played a significant role in enabling the group to attain this award and the ones that have come before.

“I know in Kirklees we have thousands of people who volunteer and make a difference in our borough.

“So it is fantastic to see Mirfield in Bloom presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of the work they do.”

About Mirfield in Bloom

Mirfield in Bloom is a community group dedicated to making Mirfield a nice place to live. The group involves as many people as possible.

They have greened grey spaces, made neighbours into friends and encouraged communities from small children to senior citizens to work with each other.

What is the award?

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) is the highest award given to UK volunteer groups, being equivalent to the MBE.

The award was created in 2002 for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The prestigious award recognises exceptional work done by volunteer groups in their communities.
