Climate Change Action Plan is Launched
The Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) is officially launched today alongside revamped webpages and a film animation.
Due to the plan’s significance, it was presented to all Kirklees Councillors at council last night, alongside a first look screening of the animation.
What is Phase 2?
This action plan, which marks Phase 2 of our response to the climate emergency, is the first step in our action planning journey. Focussing on an integrated and collaborative approach to address climate change it includes both carbon reduction and climate adaptation.
It builds on the large-scale investment and actions already undertaken by us in Phase 1, such as the award-winning Abbey Road homes retrofit scheme, installation of supporting Electric Vehicle infrastructure, planting of over 35,000 trees and promotion of active travel.
Setting out the longer-term ambitions for Kirklees to reach the aim of becoming Net Zero and Climate Ready by 2038, the plan also outlines important next steps that would result in firm commitments from us.
Film animation
The film animation has been created to help summarise the plan so everyone can have an understanding of its content without the requirement to read the plan in full. Running for just a few minutes, the animation focuses on three key elements; what action has already been taken, where we are now and next steps.
Revamped webpages
The revamped webpages bring together all information on Kirklees’ climate journey to date in one place, with sections dedicated to what has been achieved since the declaration of the Climate Emergency and our aims for the future.
Councillor Will Simpson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Greener Kirklees said:
“I am delighted that Council has agreed our ambitious Climate Change Action Plan and I am pleased to officially launch the revamped website and film animation, to help make this detailed document accessible for all.
“Climate Change is a global issue, which we have and will continue to experience the impact of on a local level across Kirklees.
“Local, collaborative climate action by all is essential to protect our environment and livelihoods for future generations. This action plan doesn’t just outline actions for Kirklees Council, but measures that can be adopted by us all as residents, businesses, charities and partners alike, as we all must be on this journey to a Net Zero and Climate Ready future, together.”
The plan provides reassurances of our intended actions and anticipated joint benefits, such as health and wellbeing, it will generate. These benefits could also include improved access to high quality green spaces for people living in towns/villages and access to more green skills and jobs within Kirklees.
Who has been involved?
Residents and other stakeholders have played a key role in the development of the action plan to date, taking part in workshops and the climate survey, and will continue to be a key part of its journey. This will ensure it positively benefits and impacts Kirklees and everyone in its communities and is representative of the diversity and unique characteristics of the area.
