Kirklees children celebrate World Book Day 2023

Wizards, Oompa Loompas, Harry Potter and the Mad Hatter all made an appearance at our 2023 World Book Day quiz.

The annual event brought together almost 150 children from schools across Kirklees for a fun competition to celebrate World Book Day.

Conrad Burdekin, local poet and author of several books, was compere and quizmaster, entertaining the children with poetry between rounds.

Split into 37 teams, the children all raced to answer questions from a selection of 20 books from a reading list provided earlier in the school year.

The winning school, Colne Valley High, were presented with a trophy by the Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Masood Ahmed. They achieved perfect scores in two rounds and will now proudly display the trophy in their school.

Runners-up were teams from Scissett Middle School and King James’s School.

Cllr Ahmed said:

“World Book Day is a significant date and demonstrates and encourages a love for reading. The quiz introduces an element of competition and fun and, having spoken to some of the children, they told me how much they enjoyed the event. We all want our children to be inspired and achieve their dreams and reading plays an important role in this.”

Cllr Carole Pattison, Cabinet member for Learning, Aspiration and Communities, said:

“It’s well established that reading is a great way for children to increase their vocabulary and knowledge. It inspires young minds and helps our learners to achieve better outcomes.

“We are proud that our children and schools are so enthusiastic about reading and, as ever, we want to thank everyone who took part in the quiz. It’s a perfect example of the way our vision for learning – called Our Kirklees Futures – aims to nurture and celebrate all learners, supporting them to fulfil their potential.”

Our Kirklees Futures brings together the full range of local education providers, plus wider partners, with the shared goal that learners of all ages will be equipped with vital skills for life. For more information, please visit the Our Kirklees Futures web page.

The World Book Day quiz is organised by Kirklees Schools Library Service and is now in its 11th year. World Book Day is an annual event to promote reading amongst children. Many schools marking the day by asking children to dress up as a character from their favourite book.
