Works progressing on Huddersfield town centre flats

Buxton House

We are progressing plans to remodel Buxton House, a high-rise block in Huddersfield town centre. Initial works are due to start in early 2025 and will result in the complete refurbishment of each flat to provide better living spaces with improved fire safety measures.

We engaged with residents in 2021 to seek views on the future of Buxton House, which was first built in 1968. As a result of those conversations, it was decided that remodelling was the best course of action. Current residents will be relocated during the works with the option of returning, subject to our allocations policy, once the project is complete.

A dedicated council housing team will work closely with residents to assist in finding suitable housing and give their full support with the moving process.

Naz Parkar, Service Director for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said:

“I’m pleased we are putting views gathered in our consultation into action and starting the process to remodel Buxton House.

“Tenant safety is our number one priority, alongside providing quality housing that meets the needs of residents. This project will provide more attractive living spaces in the town centre where our residents access services, leisure and work. The flats will also be brought up to the highest fire safety standards to give residents extra peace of mind.

“This project is not just a standalone piece of work. It is a testament to our commitment to improving our housing stock and ties in with the wider regeneration work in the town centre as part of the Huddersfield Blueprint to create a thriving, family-friendly place to live, work and visit.”

A public consultation will take place in spring 2023 to allow residents to give their views on the plans as they develop.
