‘Story Endings’ is the start of the conversation about dying

Two people talking

Ahead of this year’s national Dying Matters Awareness Week (8-14 May), Kirklees Libraries, The Kirkwood and Manasamitra – an artist-led organisation based in Dewsbury – are encouraging people to talk openly about death, dying, grief and loss as part of a recorded soundscape project.

Taking place at Dewsbury Library on Wednesday 3 May, the drop in sessions, called “Story Endings”, will provide an opportunity for local residents to share their stories of death and bereavement, memories of those they have lost, listen to others and take some time to reflect. People are being asked to bring along an object, poem, photograph or simply a memory to ignite conversations.

The collection of soundbites will become part of a creative project commissioned by BEAM and will form part of a digital record of Dewsbury highlighting places of interest with associated personal stories and local history.

Kirklees Libraries are safe spaces for anyone to find comfort and talk openly about their own experiences of loss, bereavement, death, and end of life. Refreshments, books and support will be available on the day and Health professionals from The Kirkwood will be on hand to offer support.
