Have your say on plans for new Joseph Norton Academy

We’re working in partnership with Wellspring Academy Trust to create a new purpose-built special school in Deighton.

The new school will be an improvement on the current site of Joseph Norton Academy in Scissett.

How will the new site be better?

It will offer 132 places for children and young people who have an Education Health & Care Plan with Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties.

The current school offers just 63 places from its Scissett site.  While the semi-rural location is great for students, and their curriculum has been improved by a school farm, the buildings in Scissett are dated and we’re limited in terms of further developments.  The children also travel large distances to get to school.

With the new development in Deighton, we’d not only be creating lots more school places for pupils aged between 4 and 18 years old (that’s Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5) – we’d also be introducing more opportunities for a wider age range.  All this would be within a high-quality building, which is more fit for purpose and suitable to support the wide range of needs from Joseph Norton Academy’s pupils.

Where will the new school be?

Our preferred site for the replacement new school is land that was formerly home to the Deighton Centre, which is central to Kirklees.
