Showing our support for the Armed Forces
We will be showing our support for cadets, families, veterans and serving personnel as we raise flags to mark the start of Armed Forces week.
Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom is an annual celebration that gives people the opportunity to show their support for the people who make up the Armed Forces community.
To mark the occasion special flags will be raised at our town halls. This will include Dewsbury, Cleckheaton, and Batley on Monday 19 June.
Special day for the Mayor
Armed Forces Day is a poignant day for the Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Cahal Burke having had a family member serve in the Royal Air Force. The Mayor is supporting the Royal Air Force Association as one of his chosen charities, alongside the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity.
Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Cahal Burke said:
“This is a very important day not just for myself but for everyone in Kirklees and the UK.
“As Mayor it is an honour to have three Mayor’s Cadets from the Army, Navy and RAF supporting me during my year as Mayor, and Armed Forces Week is also about them as they embark on their journey and their future careers possibly into HM Armed Forces.
“Our Armed Forces show immense professionalism, bravery and adaptability in various situations both at home and overseas.
“We must take time to honour and reflect on the sacrifice made by people who currently make up our Armed Force and to those who have served in the past.
“Armed Forces Day gives us all the opportunity to do just that.”
How we support our Armed Forces
We have pledged our support for the armed forces by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. The Armed Forces Covenant is a formal declaration that acknowledges our close co-operation with the Armed Forces Community.
