We need your input to shape the future of Dewsbury Bus Station. In the second round of public engagement, we’ve been given a sneak peek at the incredible £13.9 million transformational plans for Dewsbury Bus Station.

The plans are based on the valuable feedback we received during the public consultation in summer 2021. Now, it’s your chance to have your say on the updated proposals, which aim to create a more accessible, energy-efficient, and passenger-friendly bus station.

Councillor Eric Firth, Cabinet Member for Transport at Kirklees Council, said:

“As we envision a more inclusive and better-connected region, the transformation of Dewsbury Bus Station is a crucial step towards making bus travel a more attractive option for the communities of Kirklees. We invite input from residents, businesses, commuters and visitors alike to help shape our proposals, ensuring a fully renovated, accessible, and energy-efficient bus station that meets the needs of our passengers. Join us in creating a modern transportation hub that promotes convenience, connectivity, and sustainability for our community.”

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said:

“We want bus travel to be everyone’s first choice in West Yorkshire, not as a last resort but because it’s the most attractive option.

“Improving facilities for passengers is one part of our journey towards creating a more inclusive and better-connected region.

“Your opinion matters, so please make the most of this opportunity to shape our proposals to transform Dewsbury Bus Station.”

So, what can you expect from this exciting makeover?

The plans include adding more shops to enhance your shopping experience, as well as improving real-time information displays. To make future journeys even smoother, we are considering introducing rail services. Enhanced security features, mean you can feel safer and more at ease during your travels.

This transformation is not only about modernisation but also about sustainability. The new bus station will have environmentally friendly features such as a living roof, covered in environment-boosting plants, this green roof serves multiple purposes, including providing insulation, reducing stormwater runoff, and creating a visually pleasing and calming environment for visitors.  By integrating nature into the design, the bus station aims to contribute positively to the local ecosystem and promote a more sustainable future. Cycle parking facilities, and energy-saving improvements like solar panels and an air source heat pump will also support sustainability.

Inclusivity is also a top priority in these plans. Passengers will have access to a Changing Places toilet, designed specifically to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities and other access needs; with features like a hoist and height-adjustable changing bench, the bus station will be a welcoming space for everyone.

This ambitious scheme is being developed by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with Kirklees Council. It is part of the Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund program, which aims to make walking, cycling, and using public transport easier for everyone.

The first round of public consultation on the plans for Dewsbury Bus Station took place in summer 2021. Now, it’s time for the next phase of public engagement, and you have until 11.59 pm on Wednesday, 2nd August, to have your say. Don’t miss this opportunity to shape the future of our bus station!
